Flood Hydrology & Hazards Laboratory

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Department of Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences

Our lab researches watershed hydrology and flood risk under rapidly evolving environmental and anthropogenic changes. We foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and education, preparing the next generation of innovators to advance hazard resilience.

Our research blends cutting-edge data analysis

with advanced computational tools

to enhance hazard simulation,

risk assessment, and drive policy.

Reconstructing repetitive flood exposure across 78 events from 1996 to 2020 in North Carolina, USA

This study reconstructs a comprehensive, high-resolution record of flood extents in eastern North Carolina from 1996 to 2020 using machine learning and NFIP data, revealing the true scale of flood exposure—particularly repetitive flooding—beyond what traditional models and insurance records capture.
